[Middle East Seminar] Shifting sands: is it time for a new approach to working in the Middle East?

15 October 2014

With a renewed appetite for major projects and construction, the Middle East is an increasingly attractive market for Asian contractors.

A return to liquidity combined with an influx of mega projects (eg. Dubai Expo 2020, Qatar World Cup 2022, the GCC rail network) and an increasing population demanding better infrastructure, means that the Arab construction market is once again booming.

Gulf governments are seeking to form closer ties with their international counterparts, to bring in world-class expertise to help fill the gap in knowledge and resources required to complete these projects. This is leading to immense opportunities for Asian contractors and developers, particularly in the GCC countries.

However, there are significant differences that you need to be aware of when operating in the Middle East.

Topics to be presented include:

  • Key local practice and legislative matters: understand and exploit the jurisdictional differences within the region.
  • Potential risk mitigation strategies: there are some things you can't change; we identify ways of mitigating Middle East specific risks.
  • The regional arbitration landscape: using local processes to your advantage.
