You're 75% through your workout. It hurts, and you're exhausted. Your body and your mind are screaming at you to stop. Do you stop?
Physical training makes elite athletes fast and strong. But what pushes elite athletes through the pain barrier is primarily mental strength.
Dr David Gething, an Ironman Triathlete and ultramarathon runner, knows all about the pain barrier. In January 2015, David battled fatigue, jet lag and sleep deprivation to win the World Marathon Challenge, completing seven marathons in seven continents in seven days. He beat the runner-up by an aggregate of 15 minutes, and in the process set a new world record for the event. He also has the record pending for the fastest ever marathon on the Antarctic continent.
Breaking Barriers is delighted to welcome David to speak about his journey to becoming a world record holding athlete, how he balances the conflicting priorities of his training, being a full time vet and the father of two children, and how he preserves and utilises his mental and emotional reserves in order to push his body further when it is screaming at him to stop.
