Catherine Yiren Chen

An associate in our Tax group, Catherine Chen's practice encompasses a broad spectrum of transactional tax matters. She works closely with practices across the firm as well as members of the Hogan Lovells global Tax team to deliver coordinated solutions to clients.

She has advised on the tax aspects of a large variety of commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, joint ventures, IPOs, and group restructurings and reorganizations. She also has experience in advising capital markets and finance transactions.

In the funds sector, Catherine helps U.S. clients with structuring their foreign investments with maximum tax efficiency while achieving their commercial objectives. She helps foreign clients in setting up investment structures that are attractive to different types of U.S. investors, balancing often countervailing interests. She assists investment fund clients with the tax aspects throughout the fund lifecycle, from creation, through ongoing management, to termination.

In corporate and finance transactions, Catherine works closely with her transactional colleagues to provide clear advice on allocation of tax risks and responsibilities. She draws on her experience in tax disputes to clarify the practical ramifications of complex contract language and negotiate favorable provisions for clients.

Catherine prides herself on being sensitive and responsive to the institutional needs and wants of different clients. She brings her enthusiasm for her subject to every project and is committed to anticipating tax issues before they become problems.

While in law school, Catherine sharpened her writing skills as an editor of the Annual Survey of American Law and penned the article "Taxation of Digital Goods and Services." She gained practical experience as a summer associate with Hogan Lovells in 2014.
