Practice groupGlobal Regulatory

Joe Charlet focuses his practice on litigation and regulatory counselling regarding environmental, land use, transportation, and tribal matters.

As a member of the Appellate Litigation Clinic in law school, Joe briefed and argued an employee's Title VII retaliation case in the Fourth Circuit, briefed a prisoner's § 1983 tolling case in the 4th Circuit, and mooted classmates for other clinic cases argued before the Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Circuits. This work built upon his experience as a summer law clerk supporting complex civil litigation defense at the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ) Environment and Natural Resources Division (Environmental Defense Section) as well as his time as a law intern supporting litigation at the Southern Environmental Law Center through his school's Environmental and Regulatory Law Clinic.

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Joe was the managing editor of production for the Virginia Journal of International Law. He also met his school's 75 hour pro bono challenge with approximately 200 hours of pro bono work for local, state, national, and international nonprofits. Joe is particularly passionate about protecting voting rights, along with vindicating the rights of women, children, and the LGBTQ+ community. Before law school, Joe spent four years doing communications and web development after graduating from Yale University with a bachelor of arts degree in Classical Civilization.
