Seminar on EU investment treaties in our London office on 25 June 2013 at 5:30pm

19 May 2013
On 25 June 2013, Hogan Lovells will host a seminar on the future of bilateral investment treaties (BITs) in the EU.  This seminar is organised in cooperation with the British Institute of International Comparative Law (BIICL).

Some EU Member States and the European Commission challenge the continued applicability of these so-called intra-EU BITs.  The consequence of this position would be that investors cannot rely on these intra-EU BITs anymore, but would rather have to bring claims before the courts of Member States.  To date, arbitral tribunals have yet to accept this position, though it seems possible, at least, that the question will be decided by the Court of Justice of the European Union any time soon.

The seminar will be chaired by Sir David Edward KCMG PC QC, the former Judge at the European Court of Justice.  Speakers will include Jan Kleinheisterkamp (London School of Economics), Markus Burgstaller (Hogan Lovells), and Thomas Wiedmann (European Union Commission).  The seminar will commence at 5:30pm and will finish around 7:30pm with a reception afterwards.  It will be hosted in our London office, Atlantic House, Holborn Viaduct, London EC1A 2FG.  Please click here to view the invitation.  If you would like to attend, please contact markus.burgstaller@hoganlovells.com or deirdre.o'leary@hoganlovells.com.
