U.S. Health IT Policy Committee to Hold Hearing and Seek Public Comment on HIPAA Accounting of Disclosure Requirements

On September 30, 2013 (11:45am - 5:00pm EDT), the U.S. Health Information Technology Policy Committee’s Privacy and Security “Tiger Team” will convene an online public hearing to discuss how to improve transparency for patients about the uses and disclosures of their identifiable, electronic health information.   This may result in recommendations from the Policy Committee to HHS, which is considering how to implement HIPAA requirements relating to an individual’s right to an “accounting” of disclosures of their protected health information made through an electronic health record.    Health care providers, payers, innovators, business associates, and patient advocates will provide stakeholder testimony at the hearing.  The Committee is also inviting the public to provide written responses to discussion questions through the blog of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.  In addition, the Committee has allotted 15 minutes to hear public comments at the end of the hearing, from 4:45pm to 5:00pm EDT.  The Privacy Committee of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics' Subcommittee on Privacy, Confidentiality and Security and the HIT Standards Committee's Privacy and Security Work Group will also participate in the hearing.  Click here for instructions on how to listen to the hearing.
