Recognised as one of the top lawyers under the age of 40 in Asia, our IP partner Alan Chiu handles a full spectrum of contentious and advisory IP and TMT work in both Hong Kong and China, ranging from complex litigation to anti-counterfeiting portfolio, customs seizures, mediation, product labelling and trade descriptions, company name hijacking, trademark opposition/cancellation, IP due diligence, licensing, defamation, and privacy.

Alan is an experienced IP litigator who has handled a number of headline IP litigation and cross-border brand disputes covering the areas of trademark, copyright, design, patent, trade name, confidential information, passing-off/unfair competition, and domain names. In China, he advises extensively on IP enforcement strategies and has significant on-the-ground experience in handling IP litigation, administrative and criminal raids and customs seizures. He works closely with PRC Customs in counterfeits seizures and has handled over 400 cases.

Before joining Hogan Lovells, he was the Managing Director of the Beijing IP Agency of his former firm. With a computer forensic background, Alan advises on e-commerce, domain names, social media issues, cyber-security, software and cloud computing, IT compliance, and other Internet regulatory issues. Alan currently serves as a member of the East Asia & Pacific Subcommittee of the INTA Anti-Counterfeiting Committee and a member of the Technology Committee of the Hong Kong Law Society.

He is an accredited mediator, a China-Appointed Attesting Officer appointed by the PRC Ministry of Justice and an Adjunct Professor of Law appointed by the Hong Kong Shue Yan University. MIP Handbook named him as an 'IP Star' in 2014 and 2015 in patent (Hong Kong) and trademark (China) respectively, and IAM Patent 1000 also recognised him as a recommended lawyer for Hong Kong patent litigation and transaction in 2015.
