Hogan Lovells Provides Pro Bono Advice in Publishing Transgender-Affirming Hospital Policies
WASHINGTON, D.C. 7 November 2013 – Hogan Lovells is proud to announce that it provided pro bono assistance in authoring Creating Equal Access to Quality Health Care for Transgender Patients: Transgender-Affirming Hospital Policies
. This ground-breaking publication, a collaboration among the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Lambda Legal, and the LGBT Rights Committee of the New York City Bar Association, provides much-needed guidance to hospitals on best practices for care of transgender patients. New York associate Erin Meyer was one of the lead authors, with partner Jeff Schneider and associates Erin Howell and Dennis Quinio, all making contributions.
The new publication is designed for all hospitals seeking to align themselves with best practices in transgender care. It answers hospitals’ questions about transgender patients, shows them how to reduce bias and insensitivity, and provides model policy language on issues such as confidentiality, room assignments, bathroom access, non-discrimination, and recording name and gender in admitting/ registration records. The model policies can be adapted to meet the needs of individual hospitals. This long-awaited publication will play an important role in eliminating health disparities for transgender people, providing them with patient-centered care, and ensuring equity in the nation’s healthcare system.
“Hogan Lovells prides itself on our longstanding commitment to the advancement of civil rights of all Americans, including transgender people,” said US Pro Bono Partner T. Clark Weymouth. “This guide will undoubtedly make hospitals a more welcoming environment for transgender patients.”
