Hogan Lovells Continues Bay Area Expansion, Adds Seasoned Litigation Partners

SAN FRANCISCO, 4 September 2012 – Hogan Lovells announced today that commercial trial lawyers Mark Goodman and Ethan Miller have joined the firm’s Northern California offices as partners.

Goodman and Miller bring 21 years of experience in counseling clients on significant business matters and representing them in complex commercial litigation, including product liability and mass tort defense, intellectual property, real estate, unfair competition and high-end insurance coverage matters. They have been involved in large-scale litigation engagements for national and global pharmaceutical, consumer, energy and chemical companies. They join Hogan Lovells from Squire Sanders.

About the New Partners

Mark Goodman advises and represents prominent companies in Northern California and globally as part of his complex commercial litigation and trial practice. Mr. Goodman has extensive trial and appellate experience relating to intellectual property, real estate, consumer products and insurance coverage.  Mr. Goodman has acted as national coordinating counsel on several large mass tort cases and class actions, including serving as the court-appointed liaison counsel for defendants in coordinated class action litigation stemming from one of the largest recalls in U.S. and Canadian history relating to allegedly tainted pet food ingredients from China. He has represented a number of clients with respect to alleged violations of consumer protection statutes like California’s Song-Beverly Act.  His appellate experience includes a number of issues of first impression before the California Supreme Court, the California Court of Appeal, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Goodman’s global experience includes cross-border litigation, financial regulatory work in Argentina, Chile and Brazil and spin-off transactional work in Japan, China and Europe. 

Mr. Goodman holds a J.D. from Loyola Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Entertainment Law Journal, and a B.A. from Pomona College.

Ethan Miller, a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, typically tries several cases a year, in both state and federal court.  His trial practice focuses on commercial disputes such as cross-border trade secret, fraud, unfair competition, labor, multi-jurisdictional products liability and complex insurance coverage and bad faith claims. He also has a broad-ranging advisory practice representing clients in issues arising from corporate divestitures of assets and liabilities, in the formation of business entities, joint ventures, environmental compliance, cross-border data privacy protection, real estate lease negotiation, the factoring of contingent liabilities for non-US investors, workouts, SEC investigations and non-US corporate compensation plans and labor issues arising from mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Miller regularly briefs and argues appeals both arising from his own trial practice and as specially retained appellate counsel before the California and United States Supreme Courts and courts of appeal.

Mr. Miller holds a B.A. from the University of California, Riverside and a J.D. from the University of California, Davis, where he served as Articles Editor of the UC Davis Law Review.

Mr. Miller will be resident in both the San Francisco and the Palo Alto offices of the firm.
