Hogan Lovells Announces Brazilian Bar Approvals for Expansion of its Practice in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

Brazil Presence Adds Significant New Capabilities to Latin America Practice

RIO DE JANEIRO, 10 July 2013 – Hogan Lovells announced today its receipt of all Brazilian Bar Association approvals in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil for the formal launch of its Brazil practice. The office will be located in Rio de Janeiro and is the firm’s 44th office. Hogan Lovells’ expansion in Brazil is a significant step in the growth of its top tier Latin America practice. The Rio de Janeiro office will operate as a Foreign Legal Consultancy, offering international legal capabilities to Brazilian clients and companies doing business throughout Brazil and Latin America as well as assisting foreign companies entering the Brazilian market.

Having represented companies in Brazil for nearly two decades, Hogan Lovells is well positioned to provide legal services that are keenly attuned to the region’s civil law system and political realm. The firm has fostered meaningful relationships with key government officials, business leaders and local counsel while building a legal team with deep knowledge of issues arising under foreign law for both Brazilian and non-Brazilian clients.

“Given Hogan Lovells’ extensive history with local clients and the rate at which the Brazilian market is growing, establishing an office in Rio de Janeiro was both a natural and crucial next step for the firm,” said Warren Gorrell, Co-CEO of Hogan Lovells. “We see long-term opportunities in areas like infrastructure and energy, where we have leading global practices.”

Claudette Christian, a partner in Hogan Lovells’ Finance practice group who has worked extensively in Brazil since the mid-1990s, serves as Office Managing Partner in Rio de Janeiro. As the former Co-Chair of the firm’s Global Board with more than 25 years of international commercial and corporate transactional experience, Claudette’s multi-cultural perspective will be vital to the Rio de Janeiro office’s client work in both local and cross-border transactions. She is joined by a team of experienced bi-cultural and bi-nationally qualified lawyers, including those trained in both civil law and common law legal principles, all of whom live and work full-time in Rio de Janeiro. This team works closely with other Hogan Lovells offices that have practitioners with Brazil-focused practices, including New York, Miami, London, Caracas, Madrid, Frankfurt, Munich, Beijing, Paris, Singapore and Washington, DC.

“The office is critical in further solidifying our legal presence in both Brazil and Latin America,” said Claudette Christian. “We are exceptionally well positioned to advise on cross-border corporate and finance transactions, international investment and trade, and international arbitrations, and our practice capabilities and experience are closely aligned with the needs of Brazil’s rapidly expanding economy.”

The Rio de Janeiro office is also an important step in the continued expansion of Hogan Lovells’ Latin American practice, which offers an array of country-specific and cross-border services, particularly for transactions, proceedings, and matters that cross at the intersection of business and government, including antitrust merger reviews, approvals, and anti-competition regulatory proceedings. The firm’s robust capabilities in oil and gas, energy, infrastructure, international trade, international arbitration and litigation, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and financings have enabled Hogan Lovells to represent clients in some of the most significant projects in the region.
