Michael Aldrich is a partner of Hogan Lovells in Ulaanbaatar. He has devoted nearly all of his career to advising multinational corporations on their business transactions in Asia, ranging from mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment projects, telecommunications, IPOs, mining and infrastructure, technology and IT as well as strategic business planning for Asian jurisdictions. Michael began his professional experience as a legal clerk in Taiwan at Ding & Ding Law Offices in 1987. After clerking for the Honorable Murray M. Schwartz of the United States District Court for the District Delaware, he joined Baker & McKenzie's China Practice Group in 1992 where he developed an expertise in the telecoms sector. He became a partner in 1997. In 2000, he left Baker & McKenzie to start-up Perkins Coie's China practice and then joined Hogan Lovells Beijing office in 2005. In 2009, he moved to Ulaanbaatar to work with the local law firm GTs Advocates LLC to develop Hogan Lovells' practice in Mongolia, thus becoming the first permanent representative of a global firm in that country. He was qualified to practice law in California (1992), the District of Columbia (1993) and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1997).

Michael has been consistently recognized as one of Asia's legal practitioners by various Asian publication during the past ten years. He speaks English and Mandarin Chinese.

  • Advising a Mongolia company with respect to the Tavan Tolgoi coal deposits in Mongolia.
  • Assisting high fashion designers with establishing their flagship stores in Ulaanbaatar.
  • Advising various Western hedge funds on their investments in mining projects in Mongolia.
  • Advising a major United States textile company on the restructuring of its joint venture with a distressed Chinese partner.
  • Advising an international hotel management company on its project in Mongolia.
  • Advising several major United States technology companies on all aspects of doing business in China.
  • Advising a major American medical products company on the start-up of its operations in China.
  • Advising a major European food technology company on exiting its projects in China.
