Leveraging his broad technical and legal background, Dr. Mark Shelley assists clients in identifying and protecting their intellectual property, with particular emphasis on the prosecution and litigation of patents and trademarks. Mark’s practice also includes drafting patent and trademark licenses, preparing patentability, infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and counseling clients with respect to a wide range of intellectual property issues, including trade secrets and copyrights.

A chemical engineer by education, training and professional licensure, Mark has advised clients in diverse markets, including oil and gas exploration/production, agricultural chemicals, medical devices, alternative energy processes, and consumer goods.

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Mark served as in-house counsel and managed the patent portfolio of several large divisions of an international oil and gas services company. In addition to prosecuting patent applications directed to drilling tools and mud motors, he counseled his client regarding intellectual property issues in the oil and gas sector and conducted due diligence for several litigation matters.

Mark also practiced at a major Texas-based law firm for several years, where he drafted and prosecuted domestic and foreign patent applications, conducted post grant proceedings, and assisted clients in enforcing patent rights and defending against claims of patent infringement through litigation.
