Ira Schaefer has a wealth of experience litigating patent, trademark, and copyright cases, with particular emphasis on complex electronic, computer, and software cases.

He has participated in numerous Markman hearings; tried patent cases in jury and non-jury trials in federal courts throughout the United States, including the International Trade Commission (ITC); conducted arbitration trials, and has participated in mediations. His prior experience in patent prosecution enables him to prepare petitions for Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs), Post-grant review (PGRs), and covered business method (CBMs) and to advise clients on strategies for both the patent owner and the petitioner in post grant PTAB filings.

Ira successfully first chaired a patent jury trial in the Southern District of New York and has successfully tried patent jury cases in Delaware. Ira represents companies in a wide variety of industries. He has particular knowledge of bar code scanning technologies, mobile payment systems, and wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), LTE and Code division multiple access (CDMA), Radio-frequency identification (RFID), and Near field communication (NFC).

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Ira was a partner at two other major law firms and at a patent law boutique firm, he also served as U.S. patent counsel for Olivetti Corporation of America. Before becoming a lawyer, Ira was a digital design engineer for the Missile Systems Division of Raytheon Corporation.

Successfully defended a photographic laser engraving company in a patent jury trial in the SDNY relating to laser inscription of diamonds.

Represented a bar code equipment manufacturer in a jury trial in in Delaware regarding a two dimensional bar code.

Represent a lighting company in patent litigation relating to LEDs and driver circuits.
