Washington, 5 September 2017 – POLITICO Magazine has released its annual “Politico 50” list of the key thinkers, doers and visionaries who are reshaping American politics and policy. Among those profiled this year is Hogan Lovells partner Neal Katyal, who is recognized for his Supreme Court work (where he has argued 19 cases in the last 5 years, with 2 more coming up shortly) and his work representing the state of Hawaii against President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

To date, Katyal and his team have persuaded both the Court of Appeals and the District Court to block critical elements of the president’s executive order limiting travel from six Muslim-majority countries.

“In our Constitution, our bedrock principle…is an idea of freedom of religion, that we don’t single out people because of their religion,” Katyal told POLITICO Magazine.

The former Acting Solicitor General of the United States, Katyal has argued 34 cases before the Supreme Court. In the 2016-17 Term alone, he argued seven cases in six separate arguments, far more than any other advocate in the nation. At the age of 47, he has already argued more Supreme Court cases in U.S. history than any minority lawyer, with the exception of Thurgood Marshall, with whom he is currently tied.  He is also the recipient of the Edmund Randolph Award, the highest award the U.S. Justice Department can give to a civilian.

In the next three weeks, Katyal will be arguing major cases for 18 banks in the LIBOR price-fixing investigation, as well as for Shell in the Kiobel Alien Tort Statute foreign discovery request case.
