Washington, DC, 31 October 2017 – Hogan Lovells announced today that the firm was named to The National Law Journal’s 2017 Appellate Hot List. The list features an elite group of lawyers and law firms that posted hard-fought wins before the U.S. Supreme Court and in federal circuit courts across the country. This is the seventh year Hogan Lovells has been featured in the Appellate Hot List.

In selecting Hogan Lovells for this year’s list, The National Law Journal singled out the firm’s dominance before the U.S. Supreme Court. During the previous term, lawyers from the firm’s Appellate practice represented parties in more than 10 percent of the cases before the Court with practice Co-Director Neal Katyal arguing seven cases – more than any other firm or lawyer on the list.

Among the highlights from the past year contributing to the firm’s selection were major Supreme Court victories on behalf of Bristol-Myers Squibb and Wells Fargo that redefined interpretations of personal jurisdiction and the scope of the Fair Housing Act, respectively. Additionally, practice Co-Director Cate Stetson represented the Republic of Venezuela before the Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling that resulted in a new pleading standard under the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act. Other highlights include a major MDL victory for WellPoint ending years of heated litigation over reimbursements for out-of-network services, a unanimous Connecticut Supreme Court ruling affirming our closely-watched class action trial win related to Anthem’s demutualization and Initial Public Offering, and continued representation of the state of Hawaii in litigation against President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

The Hogan Lovells Appellate practice boasts a talented and experienced bench of lawyers with significant experience arguing before the Supreme Court, all 13 federal courts of appeal, the D.C. Circuit, and the Federal Circuit. All associates in the group have spent at least a year as law clerks for an appellate judge, with over half previously clerking for a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
