Hogan Lovells launches HL BaSE Legal Learning Hub

Hogan Lovells launches HL BaSE Legal Learning Hub

Press releases | 12 November 2020

London, 12 November 2020 – Hogan Lovells is taking virtual legal learning to another level, investing in the future of the UK legal community through a pipeline of potential future lawyers – before they set foot in the door.

The firm is leveraging technology and its renowned HL BaSE (Hogan Lovells' Business and Social Enterprise) MBA-style business skills training course to launch the HL BaSE Legal Learning Hub.

Open to students at every stage, from first-year at university, to vacation scheme and training contract candidates, through to those holding training contract offers at the firm, the virtual training programme will help future lawyers to develop and understand crucial commercial awareness. It will also offer the opportunity to fast-track the selection process for coveted insight scheme places, as well as vacation scheme and training contact assessment days.

The programme offers four stages, split into bite size modules that give participants flexibility and control over when and how they work:

  • Bronze for students to learn first-hand what it’s like to be a trainee solicitor at a global elite law firm. Candidates complete a virtual internship through which they will navigate a typical trainee seat rotation, including an international secondment, follow the progress of a deal, and complete a series of five trainee level tasks.
  • Silver – for first-year students looking to gain an insight into a career in commercial law. Participants gain an understanding of client work at trainee level through legal case studies and skills-based workshops, insight into the firm’s strategy and response to current market trends; and how law firm economics works. Importantly, they also secure an automatic place on the firm’s First Year Insight Scheme.
  • Gold – for penultimate year students onwards, looking to secure a vacation scheme or training contract. Students learn how to successfully navigate the two year training contract, develop business writing skills, and learn more about Hogan Lovells' practices and sectors, and client relationships. Those who complete the programme will secure an automatic place on a vacation scheme or training contract assessment day, and be given tips on how to ace a case study interview.
  • Platinum – for those holding a training contract offer with Hogan Lovells. They will learn about the seat planning and secondment process, the SQE, and the firm’s development programmes; as well as network with other future joiners.

Hogan Lovells Graduate Recruitment partner Raj Panasar said: "At a time of intense disruption, and as we all adjust to this distanced new “normal”, we are excited to harness technology to deliver this unique package of virtual training programmes.  They provide students with a much welcomed continuity as they progress through the early stages of a career in law.

"On their journey through the Legal Learning Hub, students will learn adaptability, flexibility and commercial awareness - all of these are crucial to a successful legal career. The launch represents our continued investment in the future of students and of the profession as a whole".

Following a successful pilot of the Platinum programme during summer 2020, and with over 600 registrations for the Bronze package since late September, demand is set to be high for Silver and Gold which are due to launch in late November.

The launch of the HL BaSE Legal Learning Hub is the culmination of Hogan Lovells successful transition to technology led graduate recruitment post-pandemic, having hosted virtual assessment days though newly implemented software TopScore,  a virtual insight scheme through Zoom, and launched Forage, a six-hour virtual internship, that now forms the Bronze package.
