American Lawyer Names Hogan Lovells a Finalist for Litigation Department of the Year

Washington, DC, 19 December 2017 – The American Lawyer has named Hogan Lovells one of six finalists nationally for its prestigious Litigation Department of the Year award.

The American Lawyer’s special report recognizes litigation departments based on a combination of factors, including notable wins, operations, and revenues. In naming Hogan Lovells a finalist, American Lawyer highlighted our litigators’ “knack for busting up plaintiffs’ classes,” several “marquee wins…on behalf of high-profile corporate defendants,” our market-leading expertise in “regulatory litigation,” and the firm’s “deftness at picking apart personal jurisdiction.”

Among the litigation department’s highlights from the past year were a unanimous Connecticut Supreme Court decision affirming a class action trial win for Anthem that earned Craig Hoover and Adam Levin Litigator of the Week honors and Cate Stetson’s unanimous Supreme Court victory for the Republic of Venezuela, limiting the scope of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

The American Lawyer also highlighted a significant pro bono win on behalf of more than 100 African-American Secret Service agents alleging racial discrimination against their employer. Following 16 years of hard-fought litigation led by Des Hogan, the Department of Homeland Security agreed to the largest federal employee settlement ever, with DHS paying $24 million to the agents and agreeing to implement sweeping changes to its promotion system.

The American Lawyer also noted Neal Katyal breaking Thurgood Marshall’s record for most arguments before the Supreme Court by a minority lawyer; his 8-1 high court victory for Bristol-Myers Squibb in a highly-watched products liability case; and his recent representation of the state of Hawaii against President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
