A partner in the Hogan Lovells Insurance and Reinsurance Department, Helen Chapman, focuses on advising on all aspects of insurance law and insurance regulation. Her clients include corporations who purchase insurance, insurers, reinsurers and insurance intermediaries. Having focused on insurance for her whole career Helen brings a wealth of experience to her work.

She has previously held senior positions in the in-house legal departments of a global broker and a UK authorised reinsurer. She has significant insight into the operation of the insurance market from a business, legal and regulatory perspective. Helen is an Individual Skilled Person on the PRA/FCA Skilled Persons Panel.

Representative experience

Advising on legal and regulatory aspects of insurance distribution arrangements, including agency arrangements, sales process design, and more, for clients that include UK banks.

Advising participants in the market on authorisation and compliance with UK regulation.

Advising insurance and reinsurance intermediaries regarding agency law, client money laws and regulations, terms of business, and the sale of insurance products.

Advising on the distinction between insurance and non-insurance and the regulatory implications.

Advising on insurance aspects of finance transactions, and acting for banks to protect their position through purchasing asset level cover, political risk, and credit insurance.

Advising on insurance in the context of real estate transactions.

Designing specialist insurance products such as clinical trials insurance, product liability insurance, group insurance (life, income protection and travel) and structured reinsurance and retrocession arrangements.

Leading an initiative examining the implications for the insurance market of the development of autonomous cars.
