We welcomed 12 social enterprises from the Young Academy to our London office for a legal issues training day.
The Young Academy, part of the Young Foundation, supports early stage social ventures working to educate and influence young people. With the help of members of our Corporate and Commercial teams, the entrepreneurs engaged in sessions covering legal issues from incorporation and corporate structures to directors’ duties and contractual issues – many of the topics we see social enterprises struggling with further down the line.
Working with social enterprises in a workshop format is a well-trodden path – between the HL BaSE program mini-MBA, which trains our junior lawyers and connects them with a social enterprise client, and workshops involving lawyers from our clients, it's certainly not unusual for us to advise social entrepreneurs on legal issues. But providing start-up stage training is an exciting new opportunity. We hope an early understanding of legal concerns will put them on the best possible footing to grow and achieve their social missions.
The social enterprises we trained were all part-way through the Young Academy incubator program, a development program that aims to ensure the ventures have the business knowledge and investment they need to achieve their social mission.
