2016 Citizenship Report

Citizenship

Transforming our world: Highlights of our global Citizenship commitments gives a snapshot of our major achievements during 2016.

Our Citizenship Strategy is aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of principles that work together to improve our planet for all of its occupants. We are committed to advancing all of the 17 SDGs, with a particular focus on the principles of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Gender Equality.

Commenting in the report, our global Chair Nicholas Cheffings said:

"Our Citizenship program uses the framework of the SDGs to identify and develop initiatives and policies across our offices worldwide, leveraging the knowledge of our people to help create global solutions. This work impacts society and the environment, supports economic growth, and strengthens our relationships with our people, our clients, and our communities."

In addition to our global Empowering Girls and Women Initiative, our people have contributed thousands of hours and raised thousands of dollars in support of national and local charities (our "Touch" charity partners). Our Matched Giving program ensures that all monies raised by our people are matched by the partnership.

Among the 2016 highlights, our Citizenship program has provided:

  • More than US$546,000 raised worldwide, including US$36,000 for relief efforts following the April 2016 earthquake in Ecuador
  • Approximately 39,000 lawyer hours dedicated to the Empowering Girls and Women Initiative
  • Over 45 formal partnerships with nonprofit organizations committed to empowering girls and women
  • More than 214,000 Citizenship hours
  • Almost 150,000 hours of pro bono legal work.

Bruce Gilchrist, our global Citizenship Chair, added:

"In 2016, our people devoted more than 30 hours per person to Citizenship, donating their professional skills and dedicating personal energy to upholding the rule of law, increasing access to justice, building our communities, promoting diversity and inclusion in society, raising charitable funds, and supporting sustainability initiatives. This report offers a snapshot of some of the ways in which Hogan Lovells is contributing to improve our world."
