Matched Global Giving
As a leading international law firm, we have the worldwide reach and ability to support projects that improve social conditions for some of the world's poorest people. Each of the firms which combined to form Hogan Lovells has had a strong tradition of charitable giving and of encouraging members of staff to participate in firm-supported fundraising events.
In the past year the firm has provided more than US$250,000 of matched funding to support our selected Touch charities and US$300,000 for the emergency situation in Haiti. It has also helped finance locally developed charitable initiatives and continued its financial assistance to legal services providers that work to ensure access to justice for all.
TOUCH: CHARITIES OF THE YEAR
Our matched giving campaign, Touch, is a fundraising commitment designed to advance the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals. Touch is an inclusive scheme which promotes employee engagement through a firmwide consultation. We support a local not-for-profit in each of the countries where we work, as well as supporting an international not-for-profit on a global level.
"Since the inception of Touch we have raised over £415,000 and have worked with Save the Children, Pump Aid, and Opportunity International, funding projects in Malawi, China, Indonesia, and other countries."
- Richard Tyler, Partner, London
Hogan Lovells will be working with Action Against Hunger/ACF International over the next two years to raise funds to support ACF’s intensive feeding program in Monrovia, Liberia. After recovering from 14 years of violence and civil war, Liberia has been relatively peaceful for nearly seven years. However, the destruction of facilities and infrastructure during the war has severely reduced the functioning of the government departments, public services, and subsequently people’s access to these basic services.
Our fundraising will help to:
- Provide treatment and nutritional support to over 4,000 severely malnourished children over a 12 month period
- Run an in-patient therapeutic feeding center
- Fund 7 out-patient treatment programs
- Support the Ministry of Health via technical support and training until it becomes self-sufficient and skilled enough to take over the treatment and prevention of malnutrition by itself
We are currently working with not-for-profits that provide opportunities and support to people with disabilities to help them achieve their full potential.
Touch: Acting Globally
Our international charity, ORBIS, works to save sight worldwide. Millions could be cured if they had access to proper eye care. ORBIS is working to remedy this situation today while creating sustainable services to serve future generations.
“The impact of the firm’s contribution to ORBIS’s work cannot be overstated. Staff fundraising activities helped support 88 local hospitals and the training of their eye care teams. In 2009, the firm's funds contributed to Flying Eye Hospital missions in Laos, Dominican Republic, Peru, Syria, Kenya, India, Bangladesh, and China.
“Thanks to your support, we have been able to save the sight of men, women, and children around the world – Lovells' staff have truly funded life-changing work.
“The challenge remains huge: 80 percent of blind people simply do not need to be blind. ORBIS continues to work in an integrated way with its flagship, the Flying Eye Hospital, which remains a unique symbol of hope and an advocate for sight. We look forward to strengthening our partnership in the year ahead. Thank you from ORBIS and all those whose lives you have changed.”
- Rebecca Cronin, CEO, ORBIS UK
Touch: Acting Locally
With 2012 fast approaching, London's local fundraising efforts have been focused on British Paralympic athletes and their not-for-profit organizer, ParalympicsGB.
"Lovells are a fantastic firm to partner with and have organized numerous fantastic and creative events, including sponsored abseils, cake bakes, photography competitions, and the amazing Legally Ballroom. Legally Ballroom saw 40 members of the firm put into couples to take ten weeks of dancing lessons, instructed by former professional and Latin dancing champions. This culminated in a spectacular grand final which saw Lee Pearson, nine-times Gold Paralympic medalist, joining the judging panel. It's great to be so involved in your events, and we're extremely grateful for all the effort you put in."
- Phil Lane, Chief Executive, ParalympicsGB
Other offices have selected their own local Touch charities. Paris, for example, has selected Telethon, which supports people with muscular dystrophy, and has held a number of events for this cause. The New York office is supporting Birch Family Services and in Singapore the Disability Sports Council.
LOCALLY DEVELOPED CHARITABLE INITIATIVES
The firm supports locally developed charitable initiatives which encourage our members to work together to support causes of special interest to them. Some matched funding is available for projects. The firm makes its systems and facilities available to support these efforts.
The Baltimore office is a ‘Dean’ for fundraising for CollegeBound, through which we support the Richard E. Dunne III Memorial Scholarship. CollegeBound assists students in Baltimore in the college application and testing process, paying some of the costs, and continues to work with students once they start college to support their continued success in school. The Hong Kong office has organized a number of fantastic fundraising events including a Cup Cake Jamming Day for Crossroads, a charity which aims to tackle poverty in Asia. It also supported an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania by members of the firm in aid of World Vision.
In Brussels, the firm participates in the Legal Run, a 20-kilometer race through the city by representatives of international law firms. Our Legal Run charity for 2010 is Simon & Odil, a Belgian charity that builds awareness and support among chronically ill children and their families.
For 15 years, the firm has supported a team in The Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C., involving as many as 150 walkers and runners in the fight against breast cancer. The firm has also supported employees in running a 100-kilometer Mexico challenge, a 10-kilometer Dubai run, and the London Marathon.
Through Friends of Karen, a charity that helps families with children facing serious illness, the New York office ‘adopted’ several families during the 2009 holiday season, shopping together and providing each child with warm winter outfits and coats, plenty of toys, food, decorations, and some holiday fun.
An associate team in Brussels competed with 67 other law firms, companies, and EU institutions in the Quiz for Children. The effort, sponsored by APCO Worldwide, raised more than €8,000 for UNICEF’s WASH Campaign for safe and accessible drinking water in the developing world, and for the BBC Children in Need Appeal. SUPPORTING PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES
As well as investing significant resources in Pro Bono work, Hogan Lovells supports organizations that provide direct legal services to our communities. Legal services providers have been a priority for charitable giving in the United States, where those in need will not all have legal advice and assistance without the efforts of the private bar and of not-for-profit legal services providers. We are proud to work alongside and support outstanding lawyers from organizations such as the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, the Pro Bono Partnership in New York, Legal Counsel in Los Angeles, Legal Services of Northern Virginia, Homeless Persons Representation Project in Baltimore, London Legal Support Trust, the Whitman Walker Legal Clinic, and many others.
