Alicante is the hub of the European Union’s administration for the registration and protection of trade marks and designs. Community Trade Marks (CTMs) and Community Designs (CDs), the primary tools for the protection of intellectual property in Europe, must be registered at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), located in the city.
As such, the 14 multilingual lawyers working at Hogan Lovells Alicante office focus almost exclusively on intellectual property issues, offering clients the benefits of an accumulation of know-how relating to trade marks and designs, and the laws and practices that affect them. Our close liaison with OHIM officials ensures high levels of protection for clients’ intellectual property assets.
In recent years, we have successfully guided some 10,000 applications to CTM registration, and have defended and challenged thousands of trade marks in opposition and cancellation proceedings, including numerous appeals. We represent clients in CTM proceedings before the General Court, before the European Court of Justice, and before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva.
We also manage worldwide portfolios of trade marks and designs. We coordinate and advise on enforcement issues across Europe, and develop defensive strategies to secure the best outcome for clients in any potential dispute.
