Alex Dreier's practice is focused on advising universities, medical centers, and other educational and research institutions on laws pertinent to research and education. He advises on regulation of sponsored research and clinical trials, including human subjects and laboratory animal research, conflict of interest, and research misconduct, as well as international and domestic research collaboration. He helps clients respond to government investigations and has represented clients before the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal and state courts in litigation concerning civil rights and affirmative action, human subjects research, privacy, school funding, employment discrimination, disability discrimination, and special education. He advises universities and their governing boards on matters related to governance, conflicts of interest, endowment management, international initiatives, tenure, student affairs, and financial exigency.
Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Alex was assistant to the provost and adjunct professor of law at the University of Oklahoma.
Alex is a frequent speaker on legal developments of interest to education and research clients, including at meetings of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the American Health Lawyers' Association. His views have been published in such periodicals as the Journal of College and University Law, the Bureau of National Affairs' Medical Research Law and Policy Report, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Trusteeship, and West's Education Law Reporter.

- Representation of universities in U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights investigations concerning race-conscious admissions, financial aid, and sex and disability discrimination.
- Advice to university governing boards on conflict-of-interest and endowment-related matters.
- Representation of institutions in investigations of animal research programs, human subjects research, and alleged research misconduct.
- Representation of public and private universities in cases addressing informed consent, ownership of research samples, and institutional review board approval.
- Representation of university in U.S. Supreme Court case addressing student privacy.
